MIT Wins 5th in Team Omnium at Collegiate Road Nationals
May 22, 2007 - Top riders
from the MIT Cycling Team won 5th place in the Team
Omnium at the Collegiate Road Cycling Nationals held
in Lawrence, Kansas from May 11-13, 2007. MIT was able
to defend its previous Nationals results while placing
team riders into several top 10 finishes.
A team time trial on Friday morning started MIT on
a good footing for the rest of the weekend. Team expertise
in the TTT paid off: the Women’s team rode to
a strong third place finish after Martha Buckley double
flatted on an unmarked pothole. Kristen Naegle led the
finish line charge with teammates Ilana Brito and Caitlin
Bever. The Men’s team, composed of Jason Sears,
Eric Edlund, AJ Schrauth, and Chris Tracy, rode to tenth
in a tightly contested race, with differences measured
in mere seconds. |
Flooding
from earlier weather forced a change in the road
race course, sending riders over a 1.5 mile long
section of gravel road. Buckley was up to the
challenge, joining a breakaway and sprinting to
a 5th place finish after more than 56 miles of
racing. Teammate Bever recovered after a flat,
riding with Brito for finishes in the upper thirties.
Edlund and Tracy fought out the 85 mile course
in the men’s race to finish 25th and 32nd,
respectively.
The final day of competition was the morning
criterion around Downtown Lawrence. Eight corners
per lap made the course extremely technical, complementing
the skills of veteran riders. Sears played a conservative
game of cornering and drafting, putting him into
excellent position for the final field sprint
and taking 7th at the line. Bever, another experienced
rider, finished 29th in the women’s criterium,
only six seconds behind the race leader. Naegle
rolled into 32nd in her first Nationals crit. |

Combined points from
the six races won MIT the 5th place Team Omnium.
Buckley had the highest individual omnium result
at 10th despite not being available to contest
the criterium due to scholarly duties. This year
was MIT’s fifth showing at Road Nationals
in recent years.
